2012 Volkswagen Passat ? First Drive Review

McVolkswagen: VW supersizes its Passat for the byways and driveways of America. Let?s get one thing straight: Tennessee is not Germany. If you haven?t previously stopped to consider this remarkable fact, we suggest you take a moment to ponder it. Nashville isn?t Stuttgart, Chattanooga isn?t Wolfsburg, and that eight-foot-long snake encased in Lucite and mounted [...]

We Catch the 247-hp 2012 Ford Focus ST at the Nrburgring

We’ve just caught a mule of Ford’s upcoming Focus ST as it heads into testing at the Nrburgring in Germany. While the body is stock Focus, the Brobdingnagian wheels and the center-mounted exhaust tell us that this is definitely the 247-hp, 260-lb-ft hot hatch. We expect Ford’s answer to the VW GTI to arrive in [...]

No Bull - Lamborghini prepping new 'everyday' model

Addressing this week's Reuters Global Luxury and Fashion Summit in London, Lamborghini chief executive, Stephan Winkelmann, confirmed that the Italian exoticar maker intends to broaden its market reach by introducing a new, more accessible model that could serve as an "everyday driver." While details on this future Lambo remain scarce, a four-door, four-passenger sedan seems the most likely body configuration for what will remain a fairly high-end offering.

Fiat 875-cc TwinAir named International Engine of the Year

fiat 857cc twinair
Fiat 875-cc TwinAir engine

The votes have been tallied and Fiat's turbocharged 875-cc TwinAir two-cylinder engine has captured the title of Best New Engine of 2011, Green Engine of the Year, Sub 1.0-liter Engine of the Year and even the big one: International Engine of the Year, a first for Fiat.

It's only the second time - the first being Toyota's 1.0-liter VVT-i engine way back in 1999 - that a 1.0-liter or smaller engine has earned the title of International Engine of the Year. Given how complex the TwinAir mill is, who better to describe this frugal motor than its program manager, Gianni Mastrangelo:
We wanted an engine to fully demonstrate our downsizing capabilities and we needed a displacement that could fully exploit our MultiAir system. We concluded that a two-cylinder, 875-cc setup with a turbo was capable of realizing all our development targets. There were lots of problems to be solved during this project, keeping in mind that this architecture was new. The most important challenge to overcome was integrating the MultiAir system within the two-cylinder activation unit. Plus, we wanted the NVH of the TwinAir to be at least as good as that of a four-cylinder engine.
The TwinAir crushed the competition (372 points), beating out the ever-popular Volkswagen 1.4-liter TSI Twincharger (346 points), which was bidding for its third consecutive win, by 26 points. Congrats to Fiat!

Test drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe

Is it really necessary to write a review of this car? We've already talked about the 556 horsepower Cadillac CTS-V, which has to be one of the best performance cars I have ever driven (and unbelievably inexpensive for what you get). We've also talked about the Cadillac CTS Coupe, which I think is the most beautiful applications of sheet metal ever to grace our roads. And now General Motors has combined the two to form the CTS-V Coupe. How could this possibly go wrong?

Video: Renault and Nissan imagine a world where gas powers everything

Nissan gas-powered everything
Nissan's "Gas Powered Everything" ad - Click above to watch the videos after the jump

What would the world be like if everything were powered by gasoline?

Renault-Nissan has kicked off a massive advertising campaign intended to highlight the advanced technology of electric vehicles with the debut of a pair of videos that bang home the point that consumers depend upon electricity to power items used everyday and that using gasoline is, in some instances, utterly ridiculous.

In one spot, a middle-aged man wakes up for work to the burning whistle of his gas-powered alarm clock and with a few fierce tugs at his coffee maker's rip cord, manages to fire up the gas-gulping machine. That same man, while at the office, walks up to a miniature gas pump to refuel his laptop computer.

Oh, and the owner of a Chevrolet Volt, while standing at the gas pump refueling his plug-in hybrid, watches in envy as another man across the street unplugs his Nissan Leaf and drives off as onlookers watch in amazement. Yep, that's how Nissan sees the world if "Gas Powered Everything."

Since the videos are, in our humble opinion, absolutely hilarious, we'll refrain from revealing too much. Hit the jump to view the clips. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Has the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe been revealed?

Last year, at the Beijing Auto Show, BMW unveiled the Gran Coupe concept, an elegant 4-door vehicle that previewed the company?s future Mercedes-Benz CLS competitor. Shortly after, the company announced it would be followed by a production version sometime in the first quarter of 2012. Now, a series of patent images have been revealed that illustrate what the production version may look like. Yes, you guessed it, it’s actually very similar to the concept.

The new BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe will be placed between the current 5 and 7-Series and will keep some of the features that made the concept so attractive at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year, including the frameless windows and B-pillar. We expect to see the same range of turbocharged six- and eight-cylinder engines, but an ActiveHybrid is also in the works.

If these rumors are correct, we should expect a production version at the beginning of 2012, most likely at the Geneva Motor Show.

Has the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe been revealed? originally appeared on topspeed.com on Friday, 27 May 2011 19:00 EST.
