Mazda has revealed its updated Demio (known in the U.S. as the Mazda2) and has opened the order books for the freshened compact vehicle over in Japan. Along with a minor facelift, the five-door hatchback now sports the automaker's direct-injected, 1.3-liter SkyActiv gasoline engine. With an astronomical compression ratio of 14.0:1 and stop-start technology, the tiny four-cylinder looks to be one of the most fuel efficient engines to have ever worn a Mazda badge. How high? The automaker says that the Demio returns the equivalent of 58.8 miles per gallon on the JC08 evaluation cycle.
The engine uses a range of advanced tech to achieve this fuel-sipping status, including a cooled EGR system that reduces engine knock, multi-hole fuel injectors that cool the combustion chamber, dual sequential valve timing and lightweight engine internals that are designed to reduce friction loss. You can read up on the engine's tech in Mazda's extensive presser after the jump.
Mazda has yet to release horsepower figures for the 1.3-liter Demio, but the Japanese automaker did reveal pricing. With an MSRP that starts at 1,149,000 yen ($14,303 U.S. at the current exchange rate), the updated Demio is quite a bargain. Officially, the faclifted Demio goes on sale in Japan on June 30th. We'd venture to guess that the 1.3-liter engine will show up in one of the U.S.-spec Mazda2s sometime soon. We'll see if the low-cost tag comes across the ocean as well.
