Chevrolet dealerships get charged up with Green Zones

Chevrolet Green Zone

Select Chevrolet dealership across the nation will harness the power of the sun to charge Chevy Volts and supplement the site's grid electricity. Called the Green Zone, this initiative aims to provide Chevrolet dealers with "added flexibility when it comes to charging their vehicles, while also reinforcing GM's commitment to renewable energy projects," says Chris Perry, vice-president of global Chevrolet marketing and strategy.

So far, American Chevrolet in Modesto, CA and Al Serra Auto Plaza in Grand Blanc, MI, are the only dealerships to have installed Green Zones on their property. But, as Joe Serra, president of Serra Automotive, says:
The question isn't whether to install a solar canopy, it's where and how many. It's a win for us because the electricity generated will help reduce operating costs, and it's a win for the environment since solar power helps reduce our carbon footprint.
General Motors says each solar canopy generates enough electricity to charge one Volt up to 4,500 times a year. The Green Zone initiative stems from GM Ventures' recent announcement to invest $7.5 million in Sunlogics, a solar panel manufacturing and development company.
